Lighting considerations for transport buildings in modern times

Presentation date: 26. October
Presentation time: 11:15

This paper outlines the principal architectural and functional considerations for good lighting design in transport buildings drawn from past work experiences in multidisciplinary infrastructure projects such as Crossrail in London.  Reference is also made to recent industry publications, including previously published articles on the lighting design by the Crossrail Line Wide design team and the Society of Light & Lighting “LG15: Transport Buildings” published by the SLL (CIBSE). The paper also draws on the speaker’s personal experience as a Lighting Designer in the GIA Equation team for the Crossrail Line Wide scope.

Introduced by

Carolina Florian/CO/UK, Buro Happold

Carolina is an enthusiastic and devoted individual with over 12 years’ interdisciplinary experience across various sectors. Her creative, open thinking as a lighting designer has been influenced by both her passion for light and her studies in technology and architecture-related topics.

In her current role as Associate in the specialist lighting team at BuroHappold, she advocates design excellence and contributes integrally to the management and development of the group in the UK. Prior to this she worked at GIA Equation in key hospitality, commercial and transportprojects such as Crossrail in London. Earlier in her career Carolina was part of the Design & Engineering team at Atkins where she had the opportunity to work on some of the most iconic infrastructure projects around the world.

Carolina’s experience spans across many areas of lighting design including urban lighting, masterplanning, daylight design, exterior and interior lighting design. Regardless of project size or location, Carolina’s focus is always on developing on-going successful relationships with clients and project teams. Her diverse background and experience has enabled her to work successfully with multi-disciplinary teams, bringing together an innovative approach and various building design skills.

Carolina has also participated in various industry groups over the years, and she was part of the ‘Task Group’ for the SLL LG15 guidance for good lighting in transport buildings, published in 2017 by the SLL / CIBSE. In addition, she periodically speaks at industry and academic conferences and has been a guest lecturer at universities in Colombia and the UK since 2014 – which she truly enjoys.
