RASA: Rotterdam Academy of City Astronauts creating awareness on the Dark City through Nightlabs

Presentation date: 25. October
Presentation time: 10:15

The goal of the Academy for Urban Astronauts in Rotterdam is to create awareness of the dark city through nightlabs. The academy is a poetic, activist and bridge-building project involving research partners who publish information on activities and organise night walks and workshops. The dark city of tomorrow needs a new design toolbox, a design methodology, and a new mindset.

Introduced by

Iris Dijkstra/NL, Atelier LEK

Iris Dijkstra is the founder of Atelier LEK in Rotterdam/NL and a generalist with a broad interest in technical, architectural and (social) sustainability issues. Iris graduated with a Master’s degree in Industrial Design Engineering from the Technical University of Delft (“Design for Sustainability”) and has since specialised in lighting design. In 2004 she founded Atelier LEK (Light-Energy-Color), a widely oriented, independent design company that focusses on the quality of spacial (night-time) experiences: in public spaces, and in exterior and interior architectural spaces.

Atelier LEK works at a variety of levels: developing master plans (Arnhem City Centre), illuminating architecture and art (Janskerk in Utrecht, Witte de With, Rotterdam) and designing interior lighting (Randstad head office, Lantaren Venster Theatre, Library Rotterdam). Corporate identity and product design are also part of the palette of skills offered by Atelier LEK, such as the design of the Bicycle Chain for the 11 km cycling route on the Rijn Waalpad and the award-winning Central Plaza in Rotterdam. Atelier LEK is further specialized in working with a range of different disciplines and stakeholders in an integrated design process to achieve the best quality and sustainability in the lighting designs realised.
