Culture, light and latitudes: a comparative study of lighting conditions and habits in Berlin, Brasília and Copenhagen

This paper presents the research undertaken on human perception and lighting habits based on the individual’s cultural background. The study proves that light perception and lighting habits depend on where the perceiver’s visual background was shaped. In this day and age, projects can be developed by designers in other countries and cultures. Truly understanding the context makes a project richer, more complex and at the same time more respectful and familiar to the community that will inhabit that space. The conclusion is that analyzing the culture in which a project is developed should be the first step in the design process.

Raquel studied Architecture and Urbanism to Bachelor level in Brazil, and gained her Master in Lighting Design from the University of Aalborg in Copenhagen in 2018.
She has been involved in a wide range of light-related activities in the field of theatre, events, exhibitions, and has lectured and headed workshops on lighting.
Having studied and worked on both sides of the world, Raquel has developed a special interest in the way light reflects the culture of different parts of the world, and how this can be integrated into design concepts.
