What makes PLDC so different?

At PLDC, things happen that you would never expect of a conference.

There are a number of conferences, fairs and gatherings on architectural lighting design that take place around the world in the course of a year. So why do so many lighting designers and lighting specialists appreciate PLDC so much and take the time to be part of this event? What is it that makes PLDC so special that some design practices close down altogether for almost one week to be able to attend?

Why should anyone go to PLDC when there are loads of other conferences or seminar series that offer the same thing? The more than 5500 people who attended the last five PLDCs know why. They gained the kind of experience other events have never been able to give them. That is why PLDC is such an inspiration. This year we are expecting around 1800 attendees, making PLDC by far the largest lighting design conference worldwide. We attract experts from more than 60 countries.

For some, PLDC is a happening, for others a Thought Leadership event for the lighting design community. The significance of PLDC is also rated highly outside the lighting industry. Which is why even office furniture manufacturer Sedus has decided to be part of the PLD Week in Paris. Get-togethers and social events will be taking place in manufacturers’ showrooms throughout the French capital. Architects will be invited to learn more about the importance of light in architecture. Architects such as Cristiana Cultrona will be speaking in the Sedus showroom and talking about the changes office spaces are undergoing and the role of light.

In future, architectural lighting will be practised more and more in coordination with other disciplines and areas of expertise. Insights and discoveries are inducing other professions and the general public to recognise light as a significant factor in our lives and the architectural spaces we use every day. Especially since the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine this year shows that after all these years light is finally receiving the recognition it deserves – and requires.

Further leading architects such as Alexander Rieck from Lava, Riccardo Marini, Carlo Ratti or Konstantinos Labrinopoulos and others are attending PLDC 2017 to share ideas and learn more about lighting in architecture.
