Illuminated boxes

Illuminated boxes

The Detmold campus is home to the largest faculty for Interior Design in the world and has a well-equipped lighting laboratory, which was re-inaugurated in 2019 as a centre for leading lighting research and education.

Every year, a new class of Bachelor students takes part in a special project aimed at creating lighting design scenarios inside a shoebox. The students’ task is to conceptualize, design and present a room design whereby light, colour, and surface are in focus. In the design development the student explores  how contours, colour and light interact within the room and create openings that redistribute diffused light through a series of apertures. A hole for viewers in the front of the box allows viewers to see inside the illuminated box. The miniature installations are highly diverse, and surprisingly and uniquely different every year. In 2019, a selection of these boxes will go on a trip to Rotterdam to enable PLDC attendees to experience the creatively designed shoebox spaces.

The names of the students responsible will be published soon.
